This page contains the workbooks from Tableau Public that accompany the examples contained in Zero to Data Viz as a Tableau Desktop Specialist. Use the sample data to follow the book examples, and then, use these workbooks to check your work. They will help you reinforce your understanding of the exam material. You can interact with them on this page, or download and open them in your copy of Tableau Desktop or Tableau Public.
Interact with a Viz
- What was the life expectancy in Switzerland in 2018? (Try hovering over Switzerland to see the answer.)
- Is this the country with the highest life expectancy?
- Now, take a minute with the Gapminder visual to explore how Tableau shifts and changes based on your page selection of year in the top right of the filters and controls sections. What was life expectancy in 1820?
- What happens when you click on the forward or backward arrow in the page control?
- How does the playback change when you select a continent in the color legend?
Create Basic Charts
These basic charts are key elements of any Tableau repertoire. Trying them out with new data is a great way to uncover pieces of the story while you refine your analysis. Learning that a visual doesn’t work, is just as important as knowing how to create them.
Create a Dashboard
Dashboards are a collection of views combined into a single layout, and they should lead the viewer through the story you uncover during your analysis. This example is a standard 4-box layout that lets the viewer explore the drivers of sales and profit for the Global Superstore. Have a play, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. While you’re exploring…
- Which month had the highest total sales?
- Using the Segment / Category chart as a filter, can you identify a segment that is more responsive to discounts?
- Why might profit be negative in a country?
